Lake Junaluska Chapel exterior in Fall

Memorial Chapel

A Place of Beauty, Remembrance and Peace.

Overlooking Lake Junaluska, Memorial Chapel is one of the most treasured landmarks on our grounds. Its Gothic architecture, granite exterior and more than 25 intricate stained glass windows create a setting unlike any other. But the chapel’s beauty extends beyond its architecture. Built as a memorial honoring those who served in World War II, it stands as a lasting symbol of faith, remembrance and peace. Today, it continues to welcome visitors for worship, weddings, special gatherings and quiet moments of reflection.

A Chapel with a Story to Tell

The vision for Memorial Chapel began in 1944 as a way to honor Methodists from across the Southeast who served in World War II. Completed in 1949 and dedicated to the Prince of Peace, the chapel preserves their memory through a replica of the Book of Memory, which contains more than 90,000 names of those who served.

The Art of Ukrainian Stained Glass

Look closely at the chapel’s more than 25 stained glass windows, which incorporate traditional Ukrainian Pysanky symbols representing faith, hope, protection, love and eternal life. Crafted with the work of Ukrainian immigrant and World War II veteran Lubomyr Stephan Wandzura, the windows offer a beautiful expression of the chapel’s enduring message of peace.
