More about the Rev. Joy Moss

The Rev. Joy Moss has served as an ordained deacon for the past 17 years in churches in the Asheville area, preaching, providing pastoral care and developing an after-school reading program connecting local schools and churches. In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene in 2024, she created a local distribution center and established an after-school program for the children in the Swannanoa community who were severely affected by the storm.

Moss currently serves as a chaplain at Givens Estate as needed, in addition to leading spiritual formation classes in her pottery studio. She has worked on numerous boards, including Haywood Street Congregation, a missional church in ministry with the unhoused, and on the Board of Ordained Ministry for the Western North Carolina Conference. Continually seeking to connect the church with the world, Moss also formed Asheville Beer and Hymns, which provided monthly sing-alongs in breweries.

Moss earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Appalachian State University, a bachelor’s degree in occupational therapy from East Carolina University and a master of Christian Education degree from Pfeiffer University, with a Basic Course of Study from Wesley Seminary.
