Divine Interrogation: Inward Invitations
This series explores questions God asks of those whom God calls into service. The points of departure assume that when God asks questions, God is not seeking to satisfy divine curiosity. Rather, God is inviting those being called into an inward journey to explore the depths of their being so that they may contemplate and discover more fully who they are, who their neighbors are and who God is.

“What Are You Doing Here?” (1 Kings 19:1-13) God meets Elijah in a moment of desolation. Elijah has traveled far from his home and far away from where he is engaged in consequential ministry. In a still, small voice, God asks Elijah, “What are you doing here?” This invites Elijah to journey inwardly and contemplate his physical and spiritual location to find his way to where God is calling him.

“What Is Your Name?” (Genesis 32:22-28) God meets Jacob in a moment of desperation. Jacob finds himself running from danger and towards danger. As he runs out of options, Jacob meets and wrestles with a man—whom he considers to be God—who asks him, “What is your name?” God invites Jacob to an inward journey to contemplate and redefine his selfhood, which will impact him and the generations who will follow him.

“Whom Shall I Send?” (Isaiah 6:1-8) God meets Isaiah in a moment of wonderment. After a time of national prosperity, Isaiah has an encounter in the temple that disrupts his world. Isaiah experienced God in a visceral way and expressed a sense of unworthiness. Once his guilt and sin were removed in that encounter, God asked in Isaiah’s hearing, “Whom shall I send?” This invited Isaiah to journey inwardly and contemplate a faithful response to himself, his people and his God.
