Lake Junaluska gets six new pickleball courts

Jan. 21, 2025

Pickleball players rejoice! Lake Junaluska is now home to six new dedicated pickleball courts, which are open and ready for play.

Thanks to charitable giving and a grant-funded partnership between Haywood County and Lake Junaluska, the project increases local opportunities for pickleball players of all levels to pursue the fast-paced, high-energy game.

“This is a big deal for our community and the entire Southeast,” said Ken Howle, executive director of Lake Junaluska. “The upgraded facilities will allow us to host multiday tournaments and camps, bringing significant economic and social benefits to Haywood County.”

Already on the calendar for 2025 are two Suncoast pickleball camps: May 4-9 and Oct. 5-10, which offer lodging, meals and training for players of all levels. The upgraded courts will also host senior games and be open for community use, providing year-round opportunities for recreation and social connection. Lake Junaluska is also home to four tennis courts, which can be temporarily converted to pickleball courts as needed.

The pickleball court expansion project will also include upgrades to the adjacent public bathrooms, enhancing the player, spectator and visitor experience.
“This partnership underscores Haywood County’s commitment to improving recreational opportunities for residents and visitors,” said Haywood County Manager Bryant Morehead. “These projects are investments in our community’s health, well-being and economic vitality.”
