National Day of Prayer service to be held at Lake Junaluska amphitheater

April 7, 2026

LAKE JUNALUSKA—A National Day of Prayer service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 7, at the amphitheater below the Cross at Lake Junaluska.

The service is open to the public and is an opportunity to come together as a community to pray for the nation, said Linda Carlson and Melba Hanson, co-coordinators of the 2026 National Day of Prayer event at Lake Junaluska.

The theme for this year’s service is Glorify God Among the Nations, Seeking Him in All Generations,” based on 1 Chronicles 16:24.

“As we celebrate the 75th anniversary of the National Day of Prayer, we are reminded that each generation needs God’s guidance to navigate the problems within its culture. In seeking Him, we humble ourselves asking His perfect will be done in our nation. Two hundred fifty years ago this year, our founding fathers also recognized the importance of seeking God and leaning on Him.

We invite the entire Haywood County community to join us in celebrating this significant event and reaffirming its purpose,” Carlson and Hanson said in a joint statement.

The Rev. Dr. Stephen Buys, lead pastor of Orchard Church in Waynesville, will direct the service, assisted by community prayer leaders. Music will be under the direction of Hilda Ryan. In case of rain, the event will be held at Lake Junaluska’s Memorial Chapel.

Prayer leaders and their focus areas of prayer will be:

  • Family – Jennifer Mathis, homeschool parent, Canton
  • Church – the Rev. William “Billy” Staley, of Harris Chapel AME Zion Church, Canton
  • Workplace –Pastor Curt McClure, Biltmore Church, Waynesville campus
  • Education – Chuck Francis, chairman, Haywood County School Board
  • Military – Bob Buckelew, a Marine and a Vietnam veteran who has received three Purple Heart medals
  • Government – Tommy Long, Haywood County commissioner
  • Art, media and entertainment – Carolyn Olliff, biblical counselor, Orchard Church

The service will be one of thousands of local National Day of Prayer events to be held across the country. In 1952, Congress established an annual day of prayer and, in 1988, that law was amended, designating the National Day of Prayer as the first Thursday in May.
