Lake Junaluska and Wilderness Trail, a long-time adventure and backpacking ministry, have joined forces to launch a new satellite program at Lake Junaluska June 6–11.
Based in Troutdale, Virginia, with an office at First United Methodist Church of Waynesville, Wilderness Trail has a 39-year history of leading backpacking trips for middle school and high school students in the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area in Virginia. Participants in the Lake Junaluska program will spend four nights backpacking in nearby Pisgah National Forest, said Matthew Blackburn, summer director of Wilderness Trail.
“We’ll begin with an opening retreat at Lake Junaluska on the first day, where groups will spend the afternoon preparing for the hike,” Blackburn said. “That evening they’ll head out with their hiking groups to begin a four-night journey into the woods.”
The hikers will return to Lake Junaluska for a closing retreat and spend their final night on the grounds.
Blackburn emphasized that the Lake Junaluska session is designed for organized youth groups and youth programs rather than individual participants.
“Our ministry works best when groups experience the journey together and then carry it back home with them,” he said. He also encouraged youth leaders who bring their groups to Wilderness Trail to take advantage of time at Lake Junaluska during the program.
No previous hiking or backpacking experience is required. Participants need only bring a sleeping bag; a full packing list is available at Wtrail.com.
“We have a great opportunity to expand this life-changing ministry by partnering with Lake Junaluska, which has a long legacy of summer youth ministry,” Blackburn said.
Pat McKim, director of program ministries for Lake Junaluska, said the partnership is a natural fit. “Wilderness Trail is an amazing ministry that helps youth and young adults connect with God’s creation both on the trail and during retreat time here at Lake Junaluska,” McKim said. “We hope this ministry will become a tradition for groups returning each summer to experience adventure and retreat in these beautiful mountains.”
The program is limited to 40 participants and the deadline to register is March 31. To register, visit https://bit.ly/
