A National Day of Prayer service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 1, at the amphitheater below the Cross at Lake Junaluska.
The service is open to the public and is an opportunity to come together as a community to pray for the nation, said Linda Carlson and Melba Hanson, co-coordinators of the 2025 National Day of Prayer event at Lake Junaluska.
The theme for this year’s service is “Pour Out to the God of HOPE and Be Filled,” from Romans 15:13. “The theme of hope this year is especially meaningful to those of us in Haywood County following the devastation of Hurricane Helene. We know that our hope comes from the Lord,” Hanson said. “As we gather at the Cross this year, we will be praying alongside thousands of other people across our nation for our local and national governments, their leaders, and other various service sectors of our society.”
The Rev. Dr. Stephen Buys, lead pastor of Orchard Church in Waynesville, will direct the service, assisted by community prayer leaders. Music will be under the direction of Hilda Ryan.
Prayer leaders and their focus areas of prayer will be:
Family – Jennifer Mathis, homeschool parent, Canton
Church – the Rev. William “Billy” Staley, of Harris Chapel AME Zion Church, Canton
Workplace –Pastor Curt McClure, Biltmore Church, Waynesville campus
Education – Chuck Francis, chairman, Haywood County School Board
Military – Bob Buckelew, a Marine and a Vietnam veteran who has received three Purple Heart medals
Government – Haywood County Sheriff Bill Wilke
Art, media and entertainment – Carolyn Olliff, biblical counselor
The service will be one of thousands of local National Day of Prayer events to be held across the country. In 1952, Congress established an annual day of prayer and, in 1988, that law was amended, designating the National Day of Prayer as the first Thursday in May.
