New Lake Junaluska program ministries director says new job has brought her ‘home’

March 11, 2024

Pat McKim is the new director of program ministries for Lake Junaluska. She began work Friday, March 1.

As Lake Junaluska’s director of program ministries, McKim is responsible for planning, promoting and implementing all programs sponsored by Lake Junaluska, such as youth ministry events, Summer Worship Series, summer activities, adult and family ministries and more. She most recently served as director of discipleship for St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in Hickory.

McKim’s long history with Lake Junaluska began when she was 8 years old and her family moved to Lake Junaluska to be near her grandparents who lived nearby on Littleton Road. She said her grandfather, Glen Lackey, was the last circuit rider of the Western North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church.

“Pat’s call to ministry was formed at Lake Junaluska in Shackford Hall and at the Cross,” Michael D. Huber, general manager of Lake Junaluska, said. “Her experience in local church settings, district and conference event planning and her ability to bring people together will be an asset to Lake Junaluska. Her love of Lake Junaluska and for Christian hospitality makes her an ideal fit at this time in the life of our ministry.”

McKim said summers at Lake Junaluska transformed her life, and called her hiring “an honor.” “My call to the ministry of Christian education came during one of those summers following a candlelight walk from Shackford Hall to the Cross. I was 16 years old and heard the call to bring people to the Cross. It was not just that physical Cross, but I knew wherever I served that the Junaluska Cross would forever be part of showing others this wonderful place. My calling has led me back here – full circle – to continue bringing people to the Cross,” she said.

McKim has served in Christian education in several United Methodist congregations across Western North Carolina. She enjoyed leading youth and adult mission teams in several of those churches. She earned her undergraduate and graduate degrees in Christian education from Pfeiffer University and a certificate in nonprofit management from Duke University.

Among other certifications and licensures, she is a licensed foster parent, a certified Stephen Ministry trainer and Guardian ad Litem.

McKim has a daughter, who is a student at the University of North Carolina Asheville, and a son, daughter-in-law and granddaughter in Lexington. She enjoys traveling and hiking.
